Lesson Plans

The following is a lesson plan and Power Point I created and presented during my internship:
Paper Crane Lesson Plan

Reflection on Paper Crane Lesson:

Students were excited about the lesson but the majority of students did not have a geometry set so discovering theorems was an impossible feat without rulers and protractors.  I changed the focus to an emphasis on definitions.  The students were very proficient in the definitions by the end of class and created three paper cranes with the last crane being a race to completion.  The students were hesitant to open up the crane after they were created because they had names for the cranes and considered all the cranes part of a family.  However, I consider the overall lesson a success because the students were very much more aware of the definitions and I was able to ease into instruction of other material in later classes.

The following is a lesson plan with FNMI content that I created during my internship:
Stick Dice Lesson Plan
also available at http://www.scribd.com/doc/85509384/Stick-Dice-Lesson-Plan

Reflection on Stick Dice Lesson Plan:

I used the lesson as an introduction to exponents in Grade 9 Mathematics.  During the lesson, I helped to increase the students' interest in math and their knowledge of different cultures.  The students were highly engaged throughout the lesson and were excited about playing the Stick Dice game.  The retention of their knowledge of the mathematical concept was assessed the next day and the majority of the students remembered the concept as well as the culture aspects taught about the Pomo Indians of California.  This lesson could also be used to introduce probability or multiplication of fractions.
